Kathy Riley of Brooklyn Jesuit Prep Awarded November's Stellar Teacher!
Kathy Riley believes that there is never a moment to be wasted, and thus inspires her students to read even while on field trips!

Kathy Riley has worked at Brooklyn Jesuit Prep for the past three years.  In that time she has rewritten the 8th grade English Curriculum as well as the 8th grade Social Studies curriculum.  She demands only the best work from her students.  This year her students have read a wide range of books beginning with Shakespeare, continuing with the Diary of Anne Frank and ending with Animal Farm.  Her enthusiasm for academics and hard work has definitely influenced her students.  Even on field trips she has her students reading their class novels on the subway and writing discussion questions.  She believes there is never a moment to be wasted.

In addition Kathy has begun a Community Service Program at our school.  One Saturday a month she and a group of ten or so students participate in a community works project.  She always reminds the students, “To whom much is given much is expected.” (Luke 12:48)  She feels that it is important that the students learn that with their NativityMiguel education comes an obligation to give back to the neighborhood.  Like all good teachers, Kathy leads by example.  Because of her dedication, our students have participated in a Prospect Park clean-up, worked at a Food Pantry and baked cookies at Christmas for the firemen and community organizations in our neighborhood.

In her free time Kathy is a full time Masters student at Fordham University working on a Masters in Education.  She is an inspiration to the whole Brooklyn Jesuit Prep Community and that is why I nominate her for teacher of the month.
