Position Available: Resident Teacher

Connelly Middle School of the Holy Child

New York, NY

The Cornelia Connelly Center was founded in 1993 in response to the crisis in education facing girls from low-income families on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Named for a progressive 19th-century educator, the Center enables girls to develop the aspirations, confidence, skills and values to fulfill their own potential. Intentionally small, the middle school serves approximately 64 girls in grades five through eight.

Individuals, who are interested in social justice and have a passion for working with adolescents, are hired as resident interns and receive training and support through our Teacher Induction Program.  The staffing model at Connelly Middle School of the Holy Child seeks to strike a balance between experienced teachers and resident intern teachers. This program is ideal for people interested in a teaching career, however the residency is open to all candidates interested in serving at- risk youth.

New-Teacher Induction Program

Our Teacher Induction Program is a two-year program that recognizes and addresses the unique learning and emotional needs of a new teacher. Resident interns are an integral part of the life of our school; they work as full-time teachers and receive extensive training and support.  While resident interns have the same responsibilities as an experienced teacher, they receive valuable supervision and mentoring to help them succeed.  Our induction program allows new teachers to observe and plan with experienced teachers, provides co-teaching experiences with the mentor teacher or principal, and independent teaching time to try techniques and receive feedback.

Our program includes the following:

  • A two- week training curriculum that addresses the learning needs of new teachers at various stages of professional development;
  • Mentorship by an experienced classroom teacher;
  • Co-planning and teaching with an experienced teacher during the first year;
  • Quarterly meetings with the new teacher, the principal and the mentor teacher, to reflect and set achievable goals for professional development;
  • Monthly staff development workshops on topics relevant and necessary for teachers;
